Vitalik Doubts Musk’s Blue Tick Plan for Twitter

Elon Musk, the world’s richest man and “Chief Twit,” made an official announcement about the much-talked-about subscription plan for the verification tick. Now, Twitter users will have to pay $8 per month for the “blue tick.” But it was taken with a hint of suspicion by Ethereum’s co-founder, Vitalik Buterin.

Buterin is a little skeptical about how well the plan will work out, highlighting that it will depend on exactly how much due diligence is done to ensure users subscribing for blue checks are who they claim to be.

Buterin further added that paying $8 per month and calling yourself whatever you want would work against the whole point of blue check’s anti-scam role. He suggested that more actual verification would transform the results completely.

Vitalik expressed that he is not entirely agreeable to the subscription fee of $8 for the blue tick as it will create an economic hierarchy. He stressed that the current blue check is way more exclusive than yesterday’s $20 per month level. He further added that while it should differ from other premium services, verifications would be charged at cost.
